I stopped using computers a couple of years ago, but do use a garmin gps when I am on unfamiliar roads. Iignore it more or less completely until I get to an unknown intersection and want to figure out which way to turn. There are lots of great tertiary roads here in Thailand, but they are often indistinguishable from people' s driveways or deadends leading to someone' s field, and they don't show up on the paper maps at all. I was very reluctant to use the gps at first (I bought it for my field work), but it has made me much more adventurous and has allowed me to discover some great roads. Without it I would be more cautious and stick more to roads I know, as running into deadends repeatedly does dampen my adventurousness.
