August 12, 2010 After two years, woman's stolen bicycle is found By Bruno Matarazzo Jr. Staff Writer, Salem News - Salem Massachusetts SALEM — Boxford resident Melinda Lyon gave up hope of ever finding her bike after it had been stolen two years ago. But when a friend was shopping around for a bicycle recently, they came across an interesting find: Lyon's custom $3,000 Rivendell bicycle. The bicycle had been on sale on the website Craigslist. "It's pretty amazing when you think about it," Lyon said. "The person that saw it knew right away it was mine." Lyon rides her bike from her Boxford home to Salem Hospital, where she has worked for 23 years. She makes the 30-mile round trip each day, except for the colder months. Two years ago, a thief broke the lock and stole her bike. After the theft, she searched a number of websites and local bike shops, but nothing turned up — until Tuesday. Lyon eventually bought a new bike after putting in a claim with her homeowner's insurance. Salem Detective Sgt. James Page said they don't know who stole the bicycle but were able to recover it yesterday from a Somerville man who paid $200 for it on Tuesday. The Somerville man bought the bike from a Marblehead man who didn't know it had been stolen. Police were able to match the serial number on the bike turned in with Lyon's bike. "It goes to show you, Melinda and her friend never gave up on it," Page said. "We're happy she's happy." Detectives Tom Brennan and Jack Doyle handled the investigation, according to Page.
