Hi Folks,
I just joined the RBW-Owners-Bunch.
Been a long time liker of Grant Peterson designs.
I still have my Bridgestone's I bought new, a '90 RB-1 and a '91 RB-T.
The RB-T is used for 140-150 miles of commuting a week.
The RB-1 for those times when you want to zip around country roads in a
classic sports car but use a bike instead.
Sept. '09 I added my first RBW bike, a 60cm, single top-tube, Taiwan built
Sam Hillborne.
I use it for B pace club rides, weekend campers and mixed paved/ gravel road
rides.
Sam's rigged with a Nitto Mini and a R14 so it will take large and small
trunk sacks, depending on the ride, or a med.Wall basket and large Sackville
Saddlesack for campers.
I'm planning a tour next year leaving my home near Ashland, Va. ( Where the
76 and 1 bicycle routes meet and share the same road for a spell.) and
taking 76 out to Oregon, the Pacific Route to San Diego, Southern Tier to
Fla., then back up Rt.1 to home.
I bought a Surly LHT frame just for this trip and was planning on rigging it
with Tubus racks and Ortlieb Roller Plus panniers front and rear. The usual
suspects.
But I came to bicycle touring from an ultralight backpacking background and
my kit....well, I can load the whole thing in a set of 40 liter Back
Rollers.
If I move some stuff to a med. Wall basket the Ortliebs look a might
deflated.
So I'm thinking I don't need all that heavy duty touring gear.
I'm thinking I can do this ride on my Sam.....I got all my gear in the med.
Wall basket, level with the top, and in the large SaddleSack....no bulging.
But I'm also thinking I might like to try the Sackville Toursacks.
Be nice to have that space on top of a Nitto Big Rear Rack in case you need
to carry a watermelon or beer or a pic-a-nic basket.
So along with this intro I would like to inquire if there is anyone(s) among
you who have Toursacks and can vouch for 'em probably surviving a 9000+ mile
bike ride.
(I'm handy with a needle and dental floss should the odd repair occur.)
I'm thinking if I ride the Sam and use the Toursacks ( or SaddleSack) and
because I own drawers full of wool that I'm going to call the ride "The
Canvas and Leather, Wool and Steel Rectangle 'Round America".
I'm thinking about seeking out quirky sponsors too...like Ticonderosa
pencils, Grandpa's Pine Tar Soap and Metamucil.....'cause in the
unpredictable world of the touring cyclist, a little regularity is a good
thing.
Just a big 'ole classic bike/ Rivendellesque ride to the left and back.
But I digress...
Anybody used the Toursacks?
Greg
