Re: Platypuses, I'd argue they've been more trail-oriented than your wife's 2021 Joe for at least a few years. Same tyre clearance and similar chainstay length but a slacker head tube angle (72 Joe vs 70 platypus) and a lower top tube. And as for weight I suspect given the extra stay, a 55 cm Platy would actually be heavier.
A Sam or a Homer would hit the brief of 'a little less trail oriented'. A Gallop would probably live in the 'predominantly tarmac riding' category in my opinion. Good luck!
