Nice photo, John. Love the combination of the wooden fence, river, mountain, cloud and of course the Riv. Everything is well balanced. One of my goals this winter is to snap some nice BW photos on winter rides. I’m an hour outside Toronto so there will be no mountains in my shots ;-)

Inspired by Jay's B&W, here's a shot of coffee by the Slocan from 2 days ago.
A brisk ride. Light snowfall. Sipping coffee as the otters plunge and roll in the river. A fine winter ride! <Untitled - 1 of 1.jpeg> Cheers, John

I love winter riding. My favorite condition is a frozen solid singletrack with light or no snow. What works for me down to the teens is the following. Thermal bib tights with jeans or other riding pant over. Wool socks & 5/10 winter thinsulate boots. If it gets really cold I will ditch the 5/10’s in favor of some old LLBean “duck” boots with separate thinsulate inserts. These are roomy enough for two pair of socks as needed and work almost as good as the 5/10’s for gripping the flats. Up top I start with a long sleeve merino base with a marvelous Kitsbow wool flannel. Top layer is a crazy good e bay score, 7 mesh GoreTex hard shell. It’s almost too good to be true as a windbreaker & breaths really well. Ample vents help if it starts to warm up. I will usually add a merino neck gator(?) and one or two wool caps from Snek Cycling - they are the best! I too have a variety of glove options with lobster claws getting the most use. None of these clothing items are cycling specific - they all work for other cold weather activities. Ride on! ![image0.jpeg]() Sent from my iPhone
It is great to hear you guys talking about winter riding gear.
The temperature touched 80° today for my Sunday ride
Our “end of night” temperatures have dropped down to the mid or low twenties recently, though with our high-desert differentials our coldest daytime high recently has been about 42-45F, and of course no precipitation for a few weeks, so bone
dry. When I “rode” the dog on his run this morning about 8:40 am it was about 27*F and about 30*F when I left for church about 30 minutes later. A merino dress pullover under a Wabi Woolen first edition (= heavier) ls jersey converted to full zip placket under
a very light Rab windbreaker was more than warm enough, with Pear Izumi earflap cap, Tifosi wraparounds with earpieces
outside the flaps as fashion and common sense (inside, they create wind tunnels) require, Osloh jeans, narrow, clan something or other scarf, and surplus
Bundeswehr lightly lined leather gloves from Varusteleka. Oh, and Darn Tough merino socks under Specialized “Vans-type” SPD shoes. Leah would be proud.
Other than that, a winter photo looks much the same as a late fall photo.
I just saw Robert’s query about gloves. FWIW, me, I have a graded series of gloves, from wonderful DeFeet knit wools good from say 45*F (I don’t wear gloves until it’s well below 50*F) down to just above freezing; then the
Bundeswehr gloves mentioned, under which I can wear silk liners, then Pearl Izumi lobster gloves, then various combinations of the above with silk liners or DeFeets under heavier ones, then some nice brand-name (but forget brand) lined leather mittens
with ragg wool under-mittens, under all of which I can wear the silk liners or the DeFeets. In practice, it’s generally the DeFeets, then the military surplus leather ones, then the PIs, the DeFeets under one or the other, then the mittens.
Tho’ I am pretty tolerant of cold, my hands are sensitive to it, and the mix ’n’ match collection above works well for me.
Not officially the first day of winter, but when it averages -4C for a ride, and there is snow and a partially frozen lake, I figured it's time for winter photos.
Despite the cold, I was dressed well and lasted 55km, with only a few descents that felt like -10C or worse. Best thing was in the first 45 minutes I was passed only by a few cars; I love this time of year, where few folks are out-and-about, I don't see
any other cyclists, and getting a good ride in feels like a great accomplishment.
