John, I love the color. It was what attracted me to it when Brad C. said (on
this list I believe) he wanted to trade for an Atlantis. I made an offer he
could not refuse, which he took and think he wound up buying an Atlantis. I
would guess this is a very early model Homer that he refurbished and it was
like new when I took possession in 2015. This bike rides perfectly for me -
like butter. As to the VW's provenance and age, your guess is probably better
than mine. I bought a 1967 bug convertible new, off the showroom floor. It had
the old style (smaller) taillights and the old European style bumpers (as
opposed to the one-piece bumpers).Paul GermainMidlothian, Va.

Yeah Paul, I concur with RichS- that's such a beautiful bike, and that
'vintage Porsche blue' is...yowza! Image painting your bike 'Left to the
elements VW patina'! Speaking of which, I don't know much about bumpers but
don't those taillights look to be before '73?
Uh oh...
Cheers, John

Drew: Thanks for sharing these pics, I've read about rides on La Honda and
Skyline in Ray Hosler's book about his rides in the area, Once Upon a Ride
(many with Jobst Brandt). Seems like a great area for challenging excursions!

Rich, thank you but I owe the work done on the Homer's frame (and many of the
components) to the previous owner, Brad C. out in Colo. who had the canti posts
added, had it powercoated a vintage Porsche color and reworked the decals to
give it a more subdued and monochromatic feel. I like the look since it offers
a different vibe than my tuxedo Sam Hillborne, which is my dedicated touring
rig.

A better look at the color:

never get tired of seeing it. Nice work on the “customization”. That poor VW.
The rear bumper tells me it’s a 1974 or 75. I miss mine.

A bit like winter, but sunny. So nice Va. riding weather today despite the
windy conditions. My brother-in-law, Ian, joined me on his silver Hillborne for
a 42-mile figure eight route in Caroline & Spotsylvania Counties. We stopped at
the NPS-administered Stonewall Jackson Death Site for a lunch snack looking at
Amtrak passenger trains headed up & down the Eastern Seaboard on the same basic
route trains took in the Civil War. This photo is my "customized" Homer Hilsen
propped against a nice piece of organic German sculpture near the country road
intersection at Paige, Va. A local stopped to tell me this VW had been there
for as long as she had lived in the area, 20 years. I hope no one touches a
hair on its head. Talk about patina!Paul GermainMidlothian, Va.<IMG_9995.jpeg>

Thank you! It's a 61. I've been enjoying tinkering, riding, adjusting, riding,
tinkering some more, riding, and then thinking about more tinkering and riding.

I've finally recovered from a bad crash back in July. I was fortunate to
purchase this Roadeo from a list member during my sedentary recovery period,
which gave me something to look forward to these last four months. This photo
is from a ~20 mile ramble around town a few days ago. This bike is SO much fine
to ride and quite the counterpoint to my Gus Boots Willsen.
