Does the MN in your email mean you’re from Minnesota? I hope so! I do love Minnesota. Ok, back to business. If I understand your question correctly, I’m the perfect person to answer it. You are saying you like a bigger fit on a bike and your PBH is at the bottom limit for the 55, and will this be too big? Should you go with a 50?
I am 5’6” with an 81 cm PBH, which sizes me for the 50. But stubborn woman that I am, I own BOTH the 50 and the 55 Platys. Go with the 55. It has the 700c wheels and it will feel plenty luxurious and quick. I ride my 55 in all my club rides, so it’s obviously zippy. My little 50 is set up for gravel and travel and I adore that little bike and it doesn’t feel small to me at ALL. But I prefer the 700c wheels and the comfort of the 55 is a bit better. If you are asking if you should size up to a 60, unequivocally NO. It’s a big bike, and you lose the joy of a mixte if you’re negotiating that top tube with your 82 cm PBH. Also, it’s longer and more unwieldy for travel/bus racks/vehicle bike racks etc. Buying the biggest you can fit is not always the best. I know Rivendell encourages that, but they don’t factor in travel and multi-modal transportation.
