+1 to what Patrick said.

Attitude and Friends can make all the difference on a tough day. Of
course long descents after a tough climb, with lunch in an
airconditioned resturant do not hurt either. I had something similar
happen while trying to ride up Haleakala on Maui -after 6500 ft of
climbing I realized that while I could probably finish (10,000ft) it
was going to be a death march so I took heart in what I had been able
to do and like you enjoyed a nice lunch in a cool place.

Chapeau!

While your hamstring issue is probably heat related you might want to
lower your seat a small amount to see if that helps. Strain in the
hamstring is often a sign that the seat is set too high.
