Hi Eliot, My hope is that you find the proper gearing that is most comfortable for you, yet have some climbing gears.
With my success of the addition of the Avid Micro-adapter and a 20T chain ring on the 74bcd along with a 34T ring on the 110bcd and a 11-40T SunRace cassette in the back, I am quite pleased. I had to change out the Shimano M952 rear derailleur with the long elbow extension to another M952 rear derailleur here the other day. I was having trouble out on the Willapa Hills Trail this past Saturday. It was not shifting properly. Now it shifts a lot better. I had a pair of Bethoud steel fenders on my Surly Long Haul Trucker. They were some very stout and sturdy fenders. I tried the rapid rise derailleur by Shimano a long time ago. After so many years of road riding, I did not like it. I am glad to hear that you do. I have in my parts drawer both the XTR front and rear derailleurs. They are very nice. Kim Hetzel.
