I would suggest using local-to-Rivendell place names, maybe in a different language. They seem less contrived to me and would avoid possible copyright issues, etc., using made-up (or real) peoples' names (or the potential embarrassment if said real person turns out to be a child molester or an axe murderer or something. And they'd be somehow more related to Rivendell.

Walnut Creek = Nuez Arroyo in Spanish, Valnød Flod in Danish or Galchnó Abhainn in Irish.

OK, maybe this idea is short on merit.
