Y'know, as I was riding home yesterday, it struck me that I left out another
quick drivetrain troubleshooting tip:

Put the bike in the stand and run the cranks backwards at a reasonably quick
rate. If there is a stiff link in the chain, it will visibly and audibly
chatter and stick when it goes through the tension and jockey wheels.

A slightly tight link could definitely behave in the manner you've
described, as well as cause chainsuck.

I ended up taking another link pair out of my Hilsen's chain from the Riv
build.

You might also just eyeball the rear deralleur and hanger. Make sure that
the hanger didn't get bent or twisted.
