Thanks Shaun! I have to say, I was really surprised at the ability of
the larger diameter tires to smooth the rough stuff as much as it did.
I know a bunch of people are really hot on the 29er off road tip, but
I have so far been skeptical. No longer! The trails are a crazy mix
out there. You get sections of wide super fast smooth packed dirt that
will change to rough solid rock then drop into a tight twisty
singletrack with foot tall drop offs and steps. It keeps you on your
toes, but is just a blast to ride. We did parts of the loops twice
just because they are so fun.

My buddies bike is a custom titanium bike that he designed with Daryl
Funk of old school "FUNK" mountain bikes of the late 90ies. The
fabrication was done by James at BlackSheep. He took visual
inspiration from his 190? Iver Johnson with the trussed top tube, but
designed it to be disk brake specific and with clearance to run
basically any size wheel and or tire. He has a set of 650b wheels with
Neo-Moto 2.1's, and the 700c set that he can run anything from road
slicks to monster cross tires on. Not sure but he may have a 26" set
built too. Essentially built with a road/touring geometry, but able to
go anywhere. The bottom bracket height came out a bit lower than
planned at 10", but oddly enough my AHH with 42mm tires was within a
couple millimeters. We were both smacking pedals all weekend, but just
sort of road through it and revised our technique as we went.
