My wife's 47cm Atlantis (Toyo built, c. '02-'03) has Schwalbe Marathon 
Supreme in 1.6" width.  I think you'd be OK.  I just checked & I can get my 
index finger between the tire at the fork, seat stay, & chain stay.  Tires 
measure 1.46" (37 mm).  Rims are the originals used by Rivendell at the 
time; no idea if width.
