My first suggestion for lower back pain is a foam roller. Yes, it's kind of 
like stretching, but has REALLY helped me with lower back pain (especially 
hitting the glutes and hips with it). But...like I said, that's maybe too 
close to stretching for you.

I endorse walking, but I prefer to run for my "exercise that's not on a 
bike." Running a a nice easy pace is a great fully body workout...same as 
walking, but it takes less time to burn the same number of calories. A good 
post-run stretch of the hamstrings, quads, knees, and hips is also a good 
idea, but again...I know you won't have any of that. :)
