Haha! The copper outlasting the cotton is okay, and it is probably infinitely reusable. Unless you have to snip a piece to unwind it, in which case you might only get 10 to 40 years out of the wire, depending on how much you have to snip. If you wanted it green, you could probably lightly sand the wire after it's wrapped, and paint it with a patinating agent. I think you can get it in craft stores, along with copper paint.
