Good to connect with you too, Michael, even when you are wrong about thinking I am wrong. Grin. I agree, my method increases part wear, and I agree the question we each are answering in our own way, as you well express, is: "how much of my life do I want to give up trying to extend the life of chainrings?"
For my riding, oft in sloppy environs of one type or another, with stunningly abrasive, sharp, decomposed granite grit, large and small, I either put in a lot of work and still have a fiar bit of wear, or I simply ensure the bits keep working, as you describe, replaice chains more often, and figure I lose a year or so of drivetrain life, but save a year or so of my life keeping it clean.
