The ramp position was quite usable.  Not bad at all.  For the shifting 
range my drive train setup and my riding conditions required, it is a bit 
less ergonomic as compared to having them next to the levers.

The issue (also minor) with the position near the levers was that the left 
shift lever would be almost pointing to the sky most of the times, which 
made it slightly annoying to use the 'hood' position. 

I dig your current setup.  It looks solid and very usable.
