I had to read it a couple of times to see the "joke". Bicycle messengers are used in many large US cities for reasons of speed & efficiency. On any give day in New York, I'll bet quite a few of those messengers are delivering multi-million dollar contracts, proposals, lawsuits, reports, etc. You just encountered a provincial. If he rode to the PO on a horse, (not unthinkable in many rural areas), would he take offense to someone asking "Pony Express?".
