Posted before I finished... If 26" was the aspiration behind a custom, I'd say give 650b a try. Canti posts can always be moved down a few mm if you're heading off to South America or something. Otherwise, some of the nicest tires are 650b, there is great tire selection and good brake track rims are not hard to find.
