Presuming a narrow enough tire for clearence and presuming chain links line up ideally, 8t is the max, I believe? On mine, I’ve kept it at 5t and used a second chain ring to create wider range if needed. My plan for the Boots, if it happens it would be with a short forward facing horizontal dropout, so 0t difference is: 17/21 dingle, 4t difference in the two chainrings to match, and a 12t “long road descent” gear that I’ll remove chain for with a Wolf masterlink tool to make work (and thus not use very often, as it will require shirtening/lengthening the chain and getting the BIG tires out of the canti brake jaws. Grin. With 28/32 chainrings that gives me 38” low, 54” med, 76” high, or I could gear down to a 26/30, but I’m not sure I gain much as the gains decrease the lower the chainring.
