Patrick, that's just where the panniers fit on the rack. The combination of the small bags and the long wheelbase really send them back there. Bigger panniers, the likes of Arkel or ortleib, would probably look a little more normal.
Marc, I'm bummed I didn't come across Chuck's maps during my research. They look exquisite, and if I head up there again I'll probably give him a call and pick his brain on nice routes. Thanks Tony! The clem is indeed ready for more. I've removed the rack and basket on the front end of the bike since the trip, it got a little frustrating when I overloaded it and I wanted to try something different. I've since thrown on a wizard sleeve/fabio's chest as an alternative but haven't had a chance to really try it out. It has a decreased capacity compared to the basket, so I think I'll throw another dry bag on top of the rear rack to make up for it.
