G.E., those are gaters, double ventile from Hilltrek (modified to work with minimalist footwear). A core concept to staying warm is moisture management, and a great way to do that is highly breathable insulative layers over a fishnet underlayer (no sweat next to the skin that way, and vapor escapes easier than liquid), and when needed an outer wind layer that is highly breathable. Also, part of the secret to warm feet is warm legs as well as oversized shoes so insulative socks don’t compress circulation. Feet should easily slide inside the shoe a bit on the pedal.
In this case, I rode up, intentionally slightly underdressed to “test” where I was in heat generation, as well as my tweed breeks, temps dropped faster than usual as I climbed as the coldfront settled in. When I reached the writing nook I was delighted to put on the extra layers I’d shoved into my panniers “just in case” as I was new to the season.
