For me, this comes down to rim availability. If a case can be made for a long term available rim brake rim for 2.8in tires, I’ll probably bite and replace the Toyo Atlantis that lives up near Yosemite. I don’t really need or care about disc brakes in the dryness of CA, but I don’t want to be unable to buy a decent wheel set in 10 years for a bike either.
