I had the same problem.  Everything was perfect on the workstand, but 
couldn't ride the smallest rear cog without the chain slipping.  
I finally duplicated it by putting the wheel under load on my old 
turbotrainer - and there it appeared - Connex link slipping on the RD 
jockey wheels.  
It was a single Connex link, eliminated by replacing with a new Connex 
link.  
I've ridden a Connex link to failure on another bike - they do have a 
finite life, and the link slipping in the RD was the second-oldest I had in 
service.
