Ian, your question was why most basket bags aren't designed with long handles. Your solution for them works, but if I was designing a basket bag..no way José. The trick is to offer a detachable long strap and let the buyer decide if they want to use it. Making it a permanent part of the bag and hoping they don't screw it up sounds like a liability nightmare.
