All later Rivs had wider tire clearances. This was very early in the process when Grant was still battling to build a road bike around ridiculous-short racing brakes, hence the soon-to-be-introduced LongLow, which was a "sport touring" road bike with cantilevers.
Then somehow he got Shimano to make medium-reach Ultegra calipers, followed by Tektro long-reach. Btw this all upended what we call these things: Short used to be standard and medium was long.
