Regarding S24Os to Angel Island, my wife and I have done it twice with two
completely different experiences. The first time we had a campsite facing
the city and the bridge, with absolutely gorgeous weather. The sites in
that location are subject to regular winds, but for our visit, we had
perfect calm and what we call beach weather. In fact we spent some time on
the beach all alone, and other than the views, it felt like we were
somewhere in the tropics. We felt we had the island to ourselves after the
last ferry left. Nobody seemed to be camping near us, or at least that we
could hear. We brought lots of food and had a great time cooking as well as
hiking and biking all around the island. It felt perfect to us in every
way.

Our second camping trip was a little different. When we arrived at our
site, there was a large group arriving in the adjacent site. It was quite a
bit colder, making meal preparation and eating considerably less
comfortable. As expected, the large group wasn't there for a quiet
retreat. We still had a great time, but we knew it would be impossible to
repeat the first trip.

Our first trip was midweek in the spring versus a weekend in the fall. I
suppose the take home message would be that it may work out as a romantic
S24O if you're lucky, but it may be better suited for a larger group S24O.
Cheaper camping alternatives exist in the Headlands.

And regarding bicycle camping in general, it is absolutely easy and a
fantastic way to go. Our first experience with bike camping was a deep end
of the pool kind of experience. Without any experience at all, we bought a
bunch of stuff (too much), took it all (later ditched or sent back tons of
it), along with our bikes to another country and basically learned as we
went along for over a year. I wish I'd had my Atlantis (Riv content) then!
It certainly made for some interesting experiences, but I would highly
recommend doing an S24O or a weekend trip a few times before doing a long
trip.

A long trip by bicycle is also a good compatibility test for a relationship.
