I think it all depends how you set up the Bombadil- particularly what kind of bars/stem. If you use a Dirt Drop stem like the older Bridgestone MB series bikes, the bars are going to be *really* high if you size a bombadil like you would a level-tt bike. i have a 64cm quickbeam that fits just right, and a 56 bombadil that also fits just right. Actually, the top-tube is a hair longer on the 56 bombadil, but I have a dirt drop stem with the bars slightly higher than the seat, and it's like it was tailor-made.
It's really personal preference I guess, but the upsloping tt on the bombadil really makes a difference in how it fits. If you look at older Bridgestone mountain bikes, the largest sizes they offered were typically 55cm c-t, and they had level top-tubes. The 6-degree upsloping top-tube adds about 5-6cm of height to the headtube, and hence bar height. thus a 56cm bombadil will have the same handlebar- height as a 61cm MB-x would have, so at least by 80's mountain bike standards, the 56cm is large. On the other hand, if you are going to be using the Bombadil with a regular stem and moustache bars you probably want to go bigger. I notice there are already bids on this Bombadil and I hope they sell it with money left over. Keven has really good taste in bikes! I also can't wait to see the future auctions, I'm sure they'll be good (how can they not be).
