I think everybody is different on how they deal with long days on the bike. Some people just get grumpy and unhappy after a few hours, and that's no fun. Your bike has to be comfortable. I've had long days where my neck or shoulders or my tush start to hurt, and that can make things no-fun, and it just seems stupid to be going on such a long ride. You also don't necessarily have to pile on monster mileage to prepare. The longest ride I did on the roll up to this 300k was 60 miles. I do a bunch of climbing though.
The thing I didn't mention in my write up was that several of the riders and coaches associated with the high school mountain bike team I help coach were all live-following me and their encouragement texts showed up on my GPS screen. That was pretty fun on a day where I was riding solo for 13 hours straight.
