Andrew & Mike, I think that's the exact problem. It's the plastic toe box end that's almost crimped down. Right in the middle where the center strap attachment is. I first thought it was length when I originally posted, now it's just as you mentioned.
I'll try stretching it out as I am keen on getting these to work!
