bill thanks, so how do i figure out how far down the threads go on the top 
of the fork if the headset etc are on the bike?  can i tell from the inside 
of the fork?  do i guess XX inches below the top headset cup?

also, instead of a wedge this stem has a slot with an expanding bolt--looks 
like this one, https://www.ebay.com/i/192472592737?chn=ps
in this case how far down should i get that slot?
