During the ongoing battle against sore-throatness ... I came across many odd suggestions (those on the list weren't odd; those I found online, samples below, often were).
Vick's Vaporub, fondly remembered from childhood. Rub on throat and bind with scarf; sounds good to me, and I'll try it since I wear scarfs anyway. But there's a weird subset of the VVR scheme: *eat* a bit of the stuff. No thanks. Tumeric! Tumeric and ginger! Urine therapy. (You look it up.) I like this one, 'specially because the Orthodox church is in the middle of Great Lent, when if I were really serious I'd eat nothing but boiled vegetables and bread made with only wheat, water, yeast, and salt; and drink only water. (I do try to go vegan for the 6 weeks, but booze is vegan, in my book.) Eat ice cream. Any kind of ice cream product is fine. The most effective may be a milkshake. No magic principles here. The cold also soothes the inflamed tissue, easing the pain. It's a great excuse to eat lots of ice cream! The current professional wisdom is that flu and colds are caused by viruses and that exposure to cold and damp and so on makes no difference *in se*. Bullsh*t. I believe that this is an instance of "science" seeing only what it's blinkers allow it to see. At any rate, it does not correspond to my own experience, or that of, apparently, centuries of others' experience, which shows exposure to damp and cold leading to colds and flu. (I think that a great deal of what is asserted as "science" is simply blinkered conventional biases; but be that as it may. Read Kuhn, read Duhem, read Eddington ("What my net cannot catch isn't fish"), and other intelligent philosophers of science.) -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group.
