I talked to a local pharmacist this afternoon, after a nice dirt ride, taking it easy in the blustery, low-40s conditions, to avoid the usual symptom. (Not entirely successfully; have a wee sore throat right now.)
He said that the principal cause is post nasal drip, and that the only remedy for that is an antihistamine, which I don't want to take. He said that zinc is good for the immune system, but not for immediate efficacy against the symptom, and suggested that the best thing for palliation is to gargle with warm, salt water -- which I've been doing; along with keeping my neck warmly wrapped in wool. Oh, pharmacist also said that honey is good; so bought a 2 lb jar of the stuff. Goes well with lemon (Vit C) and brandy (the universal cure-all, and if it doesn't cure it, it is certainly guaranteed to make it feel better).
