I settled for p-clamps instead of the welding option :) Kainalu and Anton, thanks very much for the idea.
I was going to try some basic p-clamps I had in my pile of miscellaneous hardware. Just happened to notice these rubberized clamps at our local hardware store. It worked out perfectly. Looks almost original! Thought I'd share some pictures for the benefit of anybody else who would want to try this solution.
