IME, even the best modern sealants work best on very small punctures, where
they work excellently. But for large holes say for big nails, again IME,
they are worse than no sealant, at least for tubes, since they don't seal
these and make a mess that prevents patching. I carry spare tubes on each
of my bikes for this eventuality.

But: though from thorns I used to consider 5 flats a week normal, I find
that big punctures, where I live, are more like 1 every 5 years, though I
don't usually ride where there are a lot of sharp rocks.
