1) I'm discovering new uses for Newbaum's and twine. Below is a picture of an old model Suntour thumb shifter from a '87 Bridgestone CB-1. I put the shifter on my bike that did have bar-end shifters, but since I switched to Bosco bars recently I thought I'd try the thumbies out, trying different placements, etc...
Anyway, the Suntour shifter comes with a black plastic 'cap', and that gets stressed my the housing and cable when shifting, and since it's over 30 years old, it can break. See second pic below. So I taped and twined around the cap and housing connection for a rock solid contact zone. <https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-faYKSNLoNdc/Wkl7n1_RKgI/AAAAAAAAIDI/CIcqonir_C0VWMTkr6k1xcM5jqA2yhq3gCLcBGAs/s1600/20171231_155053.jpg> This is the stressed and broken one. <https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-pwSw5fTOIwI/Wkl7twtT7YI/AAAAAAAAIDM/TpxzQhPEMpQCEwS1RFQ50wC4ViZByvsHwCLcBGAs/s1600/20171231_155118.jpg> <https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-D4pzkGtQx0w/Wkl96rpwJbI/AAAAAAAAIDg/Fo7c0QRZIsk3YtXx947boTsTD3UjT5zlwCLcBGAs/s1600/Microshifter.jpg> Newer shifters have the tube extension like this one - 2. My tea pot came with a little rubber sleeve that went over the trigger opener. Once that got lost, it just slipped on and off, the bare metal trigger was too hot after a boil. So Newbaum's and Twine use numero dos - <https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-rtAWBPA_caY/Wkl7zqnpFVI/AAAAAAAAIDQ/zdTyhFoDjncMX4uxz6NwpZE-URBBHDd_gCLcBGAs/s1600/20171231_155616.jpg> <https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-A4xIS8Fp4p4/Wkl74NJhgpI/AAAAAAAAIDU/O2nmVoIwmlw9Bv4v8vC2zk3s1UzNnRsyACLcBGAs/s1600/20171231_155625.jpg> We're back in business.
