Hi all, thanks for the responses. So I went with the fire technique, 
because it seemed the most interesting. I dumped some mineral spirits on 
the grip, and then lit it up. Holy dynamite, that turned into a rip-roaring 
fire in a hurry. I should have taken a picture, but I was a bit concerned 
about burning the house down. Epilogue; the grip is removed. The shifter is 
a bit melted, but functional.
