Too many unknowns at this time, even if you'll probably need one with a 40T 
largest cog. Which version of the XT derailleur do you have? They vary 
quite a bit in the largest cassette cog they can handle. Also what bike, 
because bikes often have varying lengths of the derailleur hanger 
(especially the replaceable ones).

If you have the parts, why not try it without the roadlink? The worst that 
can happen is that the top pulley will rub against a large cog and then 
you'll know you'll need a roadlink. Chain wrap and chain length will be the 
same either way.
