Bob B asked about the 'white things'. It is a stack of four pale-grey foam spacers. There are two straps to go around your handlebar. Each strap is webbing that threads through those spacers and it has a nice locking buckle. That entire assembly can be taken apart. Here's a photo of the carcass of the bag with one strap+spacer-stack assembled, and one stack disassembled:

I imagine a bike with straight bars and trigger shifters hanging below the bars might need more spacers. I imagine my own bikes with drop bars will not necessarily need as many. I presume the more spacers you use, the more room there may be for your fingers to wrap around the tops of your drop bars. Are they necessary? We will see. I think that using at least one will allow you to really pull the strap tight, compressing the foam. Zero might work just as well. We'll see. If it's just the color that's bugging you, it would be easy to go at them with a sharpie and make them black. Haha.
