The black band with the nub? Its an on off switch, if your model is built with it for that. No levels of brightness. Just on/off. And yes, unless you are in deep darkness, it will never be as bright as pictured in the online vendors' pics. And, if like mine, won't be nearly as smooth distribution of light. Mine has three fields of light shooting out from tge lens. Not a universal flood like pictured on vendors' sites.
