Looking at that web site reminded me of a story my father once told me. He grew up in Africa before the 2nd World War, and was an officer in the Kings African Rifles (a British colonial regiment raised from Britain's various possessions in East Africa) during the war. He said that the great majority of the askaris (rank and file soldiers) had never worn shoes prior to joining the regiment, and as a result the boots provided were not wide enough for their feet, so they cut a slit down each side of the toebox and wore them that way.
