I braved the elements (70 deg F and clear skies) and took my Protovelo for a ride this morning, now that it is reassembled.
Frame: Protovelo with Appaloosa headbadge. Wheels; Built by Peter White. 700c 48 spoke. Velocity Chukker rims. Phil Wood 9 speed cassette rear hub. Schmidt front dynohub, 50mm Big Bens. Rivet Loveland saddle on Thompson zero offset 26.8 two bolt seatpost. Sugino RD2 Crank (48T) on VO 103mm BB - Phil Wood platform pedals with Christophe half clips Nitto Jitensha handlebars on Nitto dirtdrop stem with Rustines grips. 9 speed friction, Microshift rear derailleur, Grand Compe downtube shifter, Shimano 11 (12?) - 34 cassette B&M Eyc headlight and saddle rail mounted Toplight Line Small tail light. Tektro R556 brakes with Tektro Mountain levers Detroit Cargo leather handlebar bag The bike originally had Bosco Bullmoose handle bars, but they made me feel cramped. This was the only complete bike that I have ever bought from Rivendell, all the others were bare frames. I think only the headset, tires, rear derailleur and chain remain from what came on the bike at this point. I will probably switch the seatpost out for a Nitto S83, I could still use some more distance from the handlebars. Rides very, very smooth - gotta love that long wheelbase. The 50 mm tires only have about 1/4 inch or so clearance from the brakes. The forks seem very flexible, any sort of a big bump and I can hear the front tire barely touch. Not sure about the downtube shifter, I like the simplicity and the clean handlebars, but I haven't gotten used to the shifting yet.
