I go barefoot as my default footwear, only donning sandals for riding because I
prefer no broken toes from rocks and roots and spikes on both sides of the
pedals is simply easier for trail riding. In temps below 50 I wear shoes and
socks. My system last year worked down to -20˚F, but only just. For this year,
I’ve switched to Xero Shoes’ new Coalton, sized up two sizes for boiled wool
socks and I pull out the insert to maximize room and minimize cushion (which is
essentially none).

Socks:

With this I wear, when needed for wet or below 20˚F, a double ventile gator
from Hilltrek, with a strap custom done to fit between the sock and the shoe
and a cuff that covers most of the shoe (a bit like Riv’s splats).

The system is a poser mukluk and works better with the freeze/thaw cycle where
I live, which I learned the hard way destroys mukluks within days.

WIth abandon,
Patrick
