I forgot to mention one way cars.  Between major airports, e.g., SJO to 
PDX, you can often rent a one way dirt cheap but you have to shop around.  
Rental companies often wind up with an excess in one location & shortage at 
another.  You'd need to check several agencies, and it's luck of the draw 
on what you get.  But if you're traveling alone, you really don't care and 
the a tiny hatchback is perfect for one person + one bike.  OTH they could 
have a glut of giant SUVs.  And of course there's the shear hassle of 
driving 700 miles.  But it's a decent option to keep in mind.
