Thanks, Erl. I rode the Matthews -- my designed-for-the-bosque bike. I do ride the firmer roads, in shorter distances on the '03 Riv custom road, and even on the '99 ditto gofast, with 28 mm Elk Pass tires, but the Matthews has 50s (51 actual) and handles the terrain very well.
The elevation data was an envious poke at Deacon Patrick, who covers as much in vertical elevation change as I do in horizontal distance. The green of the bosque would not be remarkable in most temperate areas, but as a contrast to the high desert landscapes the prevail more than a mile away from the River, it is like a green jewel in a plain setting. Funny anecdote: I was talking to a client the other day who has opened up operations in the SW. He recalled doing so in New Hampshire or Vermont with a staff from around the country, and a woman from Arizona telling him that the dim and densely wooded vistas and the tightly folded hills and valleys "scared" her -- "I don't know what's *in there!"* Not only do you expect to see at least 10 miles in any direction, but the quality of light makes the light on the SoCal coast seem dim.
