I thought I'd post an update now that the dog has become comfortable in the
trailer and made his maiden voyage:

The Burley Tail Wagon was a cinch to set up and attach to the bike. I
scored a used one on Craigslist and it is just large enough for the pooch.

Wally's gradual approach was key - I first set up the trailer in our living
room and loaded it up with treats hidden in every nook and cranny so that
Pancho (the dog) would become comfortable. I added a rectangular travel
dog bed to the floor of the trailer to prevent sliding and to make it
harder for him to find the treats (I placed them under the bed so that he
would really have to twist around and get comfortable moving within the
space). I did all of this with the main flap open to avoid claustrophobia.
After a few days, I introduced some extra tasty treats (beef lungs) and
closed the flap. After doing this a few times I moved the trailer into the
lobby of our building and attached it to my bike - I then lured Pancho into
the trailer with some beef lung bits and the rest is history. We rode to
the dog park today and he was calm as can be. I'm keeping my fingers
crossed that he will be up for a repeat adventure tomorrow.

Now I need to swap out my granny gear for the smaller 24t - pulling around
a 50 lb dog is no joke!

Thanks again to all who responded with suggestions.

Cheers,

Eric in SF
