Not a Clem, but on a Hillborne with the Riv Silver crank, I went from Clem-style 24-40-pantsguard to 24-34-44.
Great improvement for what I like to do! In the old configuration, I didn’t like climbing my areas moderate hills in the 40 ring, but I felt it was overkill to switch to granny for them. 34 in front with 12-36 nine-speed is perfect for me and these moderate hills. Then I go down to the 24 by whatever for the dirt climbs in my area and a couple of really steep paved hills. And then the 44 is just generally better for the going fast times. So once again, I’ve confirmed that for my cnyclotouring interests, the benefits of gear options with triple outweigh the pants guard. Also, the swap over was easy. No bottom bracket change needed. On a Riv non-tandem country bike (Clem, Hillborne, Hunq, Appaloossa, AHH) I just trust the BB spindle length they way to get with the Silver crank. That BB was on there when it was pantsguard double. To change to triple, all I did was remove the crank, change two rings, and put the crank back on. I’m sure the results would be similar if the crank is Sugino XD. Check with Riv, but I have a feeling the Clem’s chainstays are such that what I described above would apply. -James “Triple” Warren > On Jul 16, 2017, at 12:03 PM, LLM <[email protected]> wrote: > > Has anyone converted a stock Clem from 2x8 to 3x8?
