I don't understand: why would the chain get caught between the *rear* cogs
of a 10 speed cassette? They're closer together than 9 are. Do you mean,
the narrower chain might get caught between the chainrings, being "9 speed"
and not 10?

As far as it working, I don't see why not. I'm using an old Ritchey Logic
crankset, from the 8 speed era (?) with a home brew 10 speed and it works
fine; High/Low: 42/28.  I've used 5 speed era cranks (TA Pro 5 Vis), again,
High/Low, with 9 speed cassettes; I did have the chain skate once or twice
between the rings but it went away for some reason. I certainly didn't do
anything to it. The rings and hardware were all old and, AFAIK, original.

I think -- am I right? -- that cranksets are very tolerant of different
chains; that's been my experience. Cassettes are more finicky, of course.
