This day in Tidewater, VA is one of those iffy Spring rain?-when?-better -
stick - a- jacket -in-the-basket days. With weather threatening to close in
and a chance of thunder storms I decided to take the new Appaloosa out for
a cruise. The neighborhood is especially lovely this time of year, azaleas
hanging on to last blooms, dogwood fixing to burst forth and a rare stand
of mountain laurel on this coastal plain ready to explode in glory. Took my
sweet time...not yet smelling the roses but that will come soon. The Joe
just rolls on, content to follow my easy lead. It occurs to me that the
bike is aptly named. The Appaloosa is a versatile horse. It competes in
Western events (roping, cutting and barrel racing) and English events
(eventing and show jumping). It is also used in endurance events and is
raced. So there you have it: nimble, tough with a turn of speed.

All in all it came to an easy ride of an hour or so. Break any records? Not
a chance. Count cadence? Nope. Have a good time? You betcha bygolly wow. So
there you have it. Lots of good things happen when you're content to just
hop on a bike and ride. Takes me back to the feeling of freedom I enjoyed
as a kid when returning from school I threw my books down on the kitchen
table, headed out the door and hopped on my bike (Stingray, Rudge,
depending on the time). It's a simple pleasure but a very real, sane one.

Nothing like preaching to the choir,
Marc
