A pipe wrench or "Channel-locks" are certainly better than slipjoint pliers! (Sometimes you just gotta do what ya gotta do.)
Re hammers... "If it can't be fixed with a hammer, it can't be fixed!" (I told that to a copier repair person once. He laughed so hard he dropped his screwdriver. Took him an extra 1/2 hour to retrieve it. He was still laughing once it was back in hand.)
